Rhode Island
Feb. 4th, 2005 06:23 pmI'll be talking to someone out here in California and they'll ask where I'm from and I'll tell them Rhode Island. Usually what happens next is some variation on "gosh that is a small state; it's out on the east coast, right?" Occasionally the person I'm talking to will have no idea where it is at all ("That part of New York?"). For a while this happened so much that I found myself telling people I was from New England. Lately, though, I'm back to saying Rhode Island when it comes up.
But once and a while, the other person will smile and say something like "I love Rhode Island!" and it will tun out they vacationed there once or knew someone that went to college in Providence or have some other connection with the smallest state. That makes me smile.

I should note that some of these shots were taken on opposite sides of the state from one another. If you are visiting Rhode Island and try to get your native Rhode Islander guide to show them to you on the same day, he or she will insist on packing lunch in order to make the long journey.
